10-Day Bale Mountains Expedition

A comprehensive expedition combining 6–7 days of trekking with wildlife watching, the Sanetti Plateau, Mount Tullu Dimtu, Harenna Forest and Ethiopian cultural experiences. The route follows established Bale Mountains trekking corridors, with camps generally at high altitude and daily trekking of several hours — a complete cross-section of the park's ecosystems, from Addis Ababa and back.

Day by Day

10-Day Bale Mountains Expedition Itinerary

Morning departure from Addis Ababa by road, or optional flight to Bale Robe. Continue to Dinsho, the headquarters and gateway to Bale Mountains National Park, for park registration and briefing with your professional guide. Short afternoon wildlife walk around Dinsho, looking for mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck, warthog and endemic birds.

Overnight: Dinsho campsite or lodge

Begin the trek through the Gaysay Grasslands, an excellent opportunity to see mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck and other wildlife, continuing through beautiful Afro-montane landscapes toward Adelay.

Overnight: Adelay campsite

Trek through the spectacular Web Valley and continue toward Fincha Habera and its waterfall area, searching for the Ethiopian wolf and highland birds, with a picnic lunch in the wilderness before continuing to Sodota.

Overnight: Sodota campsite

Trek deeper into the Bale Mountains, crossing Afro-alpine grasslands and mountain valleys, with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and further wildlife and birdwatching opportunities.

Overnight: Wasema campsite

Continue trekking through the high-altitude wilderness, passing dramatic volcanic rock formations and open moorland while looking for Ethiopian wolves, rock hyrax and raptors, arriving at Rafu, known for its impressive stone formations and panoramic scenery.

Overnight: Rafu campsite

Trek toward the high-altitude Garba Guracha area, crossing the vast Afro-alpine landscape to reach the beautiful highland lake, meaning "Black Lake," with an afternoon of exploration and photography around the lake.

Overnight: Garba Guracha campsite

Trek across the spectacular Sanetti Plateau at more than 4,000 m, searching for the endangered Ethiopian wolf and giant mole-rat and exploring the alpine lakes and unique vegetation, with an optional ascent of Mount Tullu Dimtu (4,377 m).

Overnight: Sanetti/Goba area

Early morning wildlife drive across the Sanetti Plateau, then descend dramatically toward the lush Harenna Forest for a forest walk searching for Bale monkeys, colobus monkeys, forest birds and other wildlife, with an optional local coffee or cultural experience.

Overnight: Harenna Forest area or Goba

Morning forest excursion and photography, then visit local communities and learn about traditional life and forest products before driving back toward Goba/Bale Robe for a farewell dinner.

Overnight: Goba/Bale Robe hotel

Drive back toward Addis Ababa, with stops for photographs and refreshments, arriving in the afternoon/evening. Optional traditional Ethiopian dinner and cultural performance before transfer to your hotel or Bole International Airport for departure.
