Destination
Lalibela
Lalibela is home to eleven medieval churches carved downward into solid volcanic rock, commissioned in the 12th century as a "New Jerusalem" for Ethiopian Christians unable to make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
The churches remain an active site of worship today, linked by tunnels and trenches, and are one of the most extraordinary feats of religious architecture anywhere in the world.
