4-Day Bale Mountains Trek
One of the most popular 4-day trekking routes in the Bale Mountains, this itinerary climbs steadily from Dinsho (3,200 m) through Sodota and Wasema to Garba Guracha — the beautiful "Black Lake" — crossing grasslands, juniper forest and the Mararo and Worgona valleys along the way. It's ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers and hikers seeking Ethiopia's finest Afro-alpine scenery.

Day by Day
4-Day Bale Mountains Trek Itinerary
Drive from Addis Ababa to Dinsho, approximately 7–8 hours, and register at the Bale Mountains National Park headquarters. In the afternoon, take a nature walk around Dinsho, looking for mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck, warthog and a wide range of endemic birds.
Overnight: Camping or lodge in Dinsho
Trek 18–20 km over 6–7 hours, passing through open grasslands, juniper forest and the Finch Habera Waterfall, with a good possibility of seeing Ethiopian wolves on the surrounding highlands.
Overnight: Sodota campsite
Trek 14–16 km over 5–6 hours, crossing the beautiful Mararo Valley. This section offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching and spotting raptors against spectacular Afro-alpine scenery.
Overnight: Wasema campsite
Trek 15–17 km over 6–7 hours, climbing near Mount Wasema (over 4,200 m) before descending through the Worgona Valley to Garba Guracha ("Black Lake"), one of the Bale Mountains' most scenic lakes, with a chance to see Ethiopian wolves and high-altitude birds. From here the group returns by vehicle to Dinsho/Goba to conclude the trek.
Overnight: Garba Guracha campsite / return to Goba
